Imported treats and local sweets

Essence Cosmetics Launch in the United States
by Jessica M

As any true cosmetics devotee knows, makeup thrills can happen at any kind of retail location, on every price level. Sometimes it’s a pleasure to “cave” on a hard-to-find product with luxurious packaging and a designer logo, and sometimes the “aha!” moment comes from an impulse purchase at the drugstore. Annie and Cavewoman have always inspired me to look high and low for rave-worthy makeup, so I’m happy to be able to report back to Blogdorf about Essence Cosmetics.

Essence Cosmetics has been around since 2001: it was founded in Germany, it spread to more than thirty countries in the global market, and it has just arrived in the United States. Most of the products are made in Europe, and the company is known for offering high quality formulas and on-trend colors at very low prices. In the States, every item is priced under five dollars. I recently had a chance to see and sample the line at a get-together hosted by Essence in New York, at the uptown location of Magnolia Bakery. (Yes, home of the famous cupcakes!)

Essence’s product displays are definitely eye-catching: they’re crammed with all the colors of the rainbow, and they’re decorated with big pictures of Bratz-like girls. Once you look past the bright colors and cartoony imagery, however, you’ll notice some very clever,high-performing products. The selection being brought to the States—it’s being sold at Ulta stores and Ulta.com--includes color cosmetics for eyes, lips, and face, nail polishes and nail art accessories, and a few makeup tools.

In addition to the permanent product line, Essence releases limited edition collections several times a year. They recently offered a“Moonlight” collection inspired by the “Twilight” books and movies; it won’t be available in the U.S., unfortunately, but I couldn’t resist taking a photo for Annie, who introduced me to “Twilight.”

The first limited edition collection to be released in the States will be “Surfer Babe,” due out in June.

I’ve had the chance to sample a few products, so I’ll be back in a few days with reviews of my favorite picks from Essence Cosmetics.

Have you ever tried anything from Essence? Feel free to comment!

I Don't Think You're Ready For This Jelly

Jill Stuart's Eye Jelly in Vintage Decor.

The texture of the eye jelly is gelatin-like. It wiggles and shimmies like jello. On the eye lid, it transforms into a sheer tint of color with sparkles. The shimmer is finely milled and there is no fallout. Coverage is buildable. I have used my fingers for just a smattering of color and shimmer. The lasting power on an eye jelly is first rate. It does not crease or budge until removal.

There is a slight scent. Just gives a clean floral vibe. The color is a mouse brown taupe in medium strength.

Jill Stuart cosmetics are currently not sold in the US. Visit http://ichibankao.com/default.aspx and http://www.bobodave.com/

Moon Over Blogdorf: Jill Stuart's Illuminance Eyes in Dazzling Moon

All lemmings can be traced back to the online beauty juggernaut called Makeupalley. This is like an opium den for beauty addicts and junkies. Every Makeupalley board has their specific beauty drug of choice. The perfume crowd salivate over the new Serge Luten's release. The nail girls talk about the Rescue Beauty Lounge polishes in reverent tones. The fashion gang loves J Crew so much that it is often referred to as "JCrack". The makeup crew has board hiccups when a new MAC collection is launched.

Each board on Makeupalley has different cliques and gangs. For the most part, the boards are friendly and open to newcomers. But there are groups that emerge that can mimic your high school cafeteria.
So who do I think is the coolest group on the makeup board?
The muaers who are into the Japanese makeup brands. Their high school equivalent is the bad girls who smoke behind the gym and date the hottest guys in town. They are the Pink Siths of the world.

I can finally hold my head high in the cool mua circles. I am the proud owner of a Jill Stuart eye shadow palette. Everything that has been written about Jill Stuart cosmetics is 100% true. Pigment and shimmer power can not be matched by anyone. The texture is buttery smooth.

My palette came straight from the shores of Japan. I was very lucky to have a good friend and the very first beauty blogger Koneko do a custom purchase for me. I gave her no direction. All I said was "pick the best one with a whole lot of shimmer fire".
Koneko selected the most magnificent palette called Dazzling Moon. It is slightly unique among the Jill Stuart palettes. It does not have a pinkish shade in the mix. There is a silver fox shimmer with a metallic tint of pale gray, a sheer cold lavender that relects blue, an iris tinged blue and a sooty black with multi-colored shimmer sparks. All infused with a glittery fire that surpasses any US brand.

Jill Stuart Cosmetics are not available in the United States. You can order from these online sources: http://ichibankao.com/default.aspx
http://www.bobodave.com/
There are other Illuminance palettes.
The others are:
#01 Jewel Dress
#02 Fantastic Light
#03 Brocade Gold
#04 Aqua Crystal
#06 Blossoming Shine
#07 Layered Gem
#08 Dazzling Moon

A Really Juicy Announcement!

Juicy Couture announced today that the brand has signed women’s fashion designer Erin Fetherston as a guest designer and creative consultant.

Fetherston will begin the collaboration in May 2010 and will work with the team on a project that spans through Juicy Couture’s Holiday 2011 collections. A few exclusive, limited-edition pieces will debut in Holiday 2010. A primary element of Fetherston’s project will be a fresh and modern reimagining of the brand’s iconic track suit, which celebrates its tenth anniversary in 2011.

If anyone can make that track suit a "lemming" it will be Erin Fetherston. She makes everything romantic.
I am crossing my fingers that she might also design some new charms for the brand too!

Fetherston is known for her feminine, romantic, and effortlessly chic designs. Her fashion credibility, individuality, and modern aesthetic make her a synergistic partner with the Juicy Couture brand.

“We are delighted to partner with Erin Fetherston,” said Edgar Huber, President of Juicy Couture. “Not only is she a gifted designer with technical knowledge of fashion craftsmanship, but she has the California roots, trend-setting approach, and individual sense of style to make her an ideal partner for Juicy Couture. I’m confident that her vision will resonate with the millions of Juicy fans across the globe.

This really is a wise choice!

The Days of Bond and Roses

Review for Bond 9's Saks-En-Rose
by Cavewoman

Yesterday I was walking in the mall with my gang. We had started the day with lunch, meeting at our regular table, greeting each other with hugs. The girls commented on how lovely I smelled. And continued to admire my fragrance all through the rest of the day. One of them even said "you get great sillage with that scent!" - she said it at least twice. I'll back up a week and tell you about it.

We were shopping in Cleveland last Sunday. It had been ages since Ms. Blogdorf and I had been able to spend the day with the gang, and we were eager to see the girls and hit the stores. With no real agenda for the day, we set out to hunt, gather, sniff, and test. We're really good at browsing. We stopped at Saks to check out what was new and noteworthy and were lingering over the Chanel counter, and I turned around to say hello to Barb, the lady at the Bond counter. We chatted a bit over how adorable the new High Line bottle was (first time I actually saw it in person, it's just beautiful) and then I spotted something else. It was familiar and yet odd. It was the Saks Fifth Avenue For Her bottle, but with a pink subway token in the center instead of the usual black-and-white token. I asked Barb what this was, and she said "oh, it's the new Saks but in a rose version." Rose. The magic word, for me anyway. I love rose scents. I sprayed, I fell in love, I caved.

I was not even aware that Bond was releasing a new Saks scent, and Barb told me that this was to be a Mothers' Day promotion but the fragrance would be a permanent part of the Bond collection. I was so captivated by the fragrance that I didn't even remember the list of notes she had told me as I was spraying. For the rest of the day, my gang commented on how lovely the fragrance was on me, and I smiled as I carried around my little Saks bag, precious box tucked safely inside. I had truly stumbled on a winner. I can't even remember the last time I fell so instantly and completely in love with a fragrance. And aren't roses the ultimate flower of love?

Bond has done a few rose-based scents in the past, and they are all part of my collection. Bryant Park is a breezy, youthful rose, and I wear it mostly in the warm-weather months. West Side is a sophisticated, womanly rose with depth and maturity. Broadway Nite is a devastatingly feminine rose-violet fragrance that is as exciting and dramatic as a rose scent can be. Saks-En-Rose is modern and complex. There is a hint of green, some subtle spice, a heart of the rose, and a woodsy base. Notes of dry dates and mace combine to give the top an exotic but restrained sweet-spice and keep the green from becoming too prominent. In the heart, the combination of tuberose and rose is unusual and perfectly balanced. And in the base, soft sandalwood, my most favorite of all wood notes, and my favorite wood to combine with rose. I think they're perfect together. The amber is barely there, just for a bit of richness, and on me I don't get much of the musk at all.

The perfumer for Saks-En-Rose, Laurent Le Guernec, has created some of my other favorite fragrances, many Bonds (including the gorgeous, spicy Harrods) and the fabulous MAC Air Of Style. He likes the nutmeg. So do I.

So now it is day 8 of owning this beautiful fragrance. I have not worn anything else since the day I bought it. It has (GASP!) replaced Chinatown as my all-time favorite Bond scent. I never thought I would say that! A huge thanks to Laurice for this new fragrance!

Crazy Busy Beautiful Carmindy

TLC's beauty guru and creator of my favorite drugstore foundation, Carmindy has a released a beauty book filled with over 600 tips. They range from the useful to the downright quirky.
It is a fun read!

Some of my favorites from the book:

*Mix a small amount of baking soda with a drop of liquid facial cleanser for lighter,brighter-looking skin without bleaching.

*Try French blue eye drops to get the red out of tired eyes. The blue color makes the whites look whiter. You can find these in boutique pharmacies or online.

*To fade a "hickie" roll a closed lipstick tube over the area.

The craziest beauty ritual:

*My grandmother taught me that snail slime helps eliminate acne. I secretly wipe a bit on my blemishes. I swear it works!
(Cheri, 37)

The beauty guide is available for $12.99 at your local bookstore.

You can win a copy of Carmindy's Crazy Busy Beautiful by posting your favorite or most wacky beauty tip in the comments.
We will pick the best one on Tuesday.

No rules but you need to leave some type of name. I worry that I will reward the wrong numbered anonymous comment.

Also keep it clean.

There is also another contest called Surprise Your Eyes sponsored by Air Optix Aqua.

Your readers have the opportunity to win more great prizes by submitting their best photo or video tip for keeping their eyes healthy and beautiful in the AIR OPTIX AQUA “Surprise Your Eyes” contest at http://www.airpotixcontest.com/before April 30th.
Two grand prize winners will receive a $5,000 cash prize and a spa day with a friend.
Celebrity makeup artist Carmindy from TLC’s “What Not to Wear” is serving as an expert judge for the contest. Check out the link below to see more tips from Carmindy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-krob6C0Dk

Shu Me The Palette

Shu Uemura's Gem Glams Summer 2010 Collection

Shu has released a summer collection online. I found G White Rainbow Pressed eye shadow at my local Nordstrom counter. Of course, it was just a tester and there were no pans to be found in the drawers. White Rainbow is a shimmer extraordinaire. Fire power is "off the hook". I wanted it instantly even though I had two glimmery Addiction shadows in my bag. I am a shimmer glutton. It is a glistening sheer snow white shade. It has all the sparks of fresh snow on a bright sunny day. It retails for $20. The other summer shades are G Gold and G Silver.

Another product that caught my eye was the Gem Glam Glowing Powder. The palette has a shattered design inspired by gemstones. Shu Palettes are always so damn cool. Inside are handy skin correctors and what appears to be a set of "kiss of sun" bronzers. It retails for $55.00.

The collection also has 3 cream eye shadows in Light Pink, Light Purple, and Ivory. They retail for $30.

You can purchase Shu cosmetics at:
http://www.shuuemura-usa.com/_us/_en/makeup/lip-gloss/gem-glam-vinyl-unlimited.htm

You might want to visit your local Shu counter to pick up the remaining stock. The are no discounts but the SA's at Nordstroms were throwing in samples and a lipstick with a purchase. I have not heard of a final pull out date in the stores. Shu will be available only online in the US.

I will miss my Shu counter.
Tell us your favorite Shu Uemura products in the comments.

Youth Quake

Christian Dior's Hydra Life Pro-Youth Skin Tint SPF 20

This is a new, Sephora exclusive, lightweight tinted moisturizer containing SPF 20. Cavewoman and I discovered it during our Sunday trek to Sephora. We both fell in love with its creaminess and coverage. The whole Hydra Life line is magnificent. The serum and moisturizer feel like a million bucks.

According to the Sephora website: Hydra Life combines three pure plant extracts derived from these gardens—Jisten, Centella, and Black Rose—to offer the skin all the benefits of the Cellular Bio-Exaltation. The tinted coverage offers light-diffusing pigments that create a natural and visibly enhanced complexion while the formula acts like a true defense barrier against environmental stress thanks to SPF UVA and UVB filters.
It no contains Parabens, Sulfates, Synthetic Fragrances, Synthetic Dyes, Petro-Chemicals, Phthalates ,GMOs, and Triclosan

I have tried to research this black rose ingredient. Black roses do not exist in real life. Centella is used to aid wound healing and leprosy.

Hydra Life Pro-Youth Skin Tint SPF 20 is a lightweight, hardcore creamy, tinted moisturizer with serious full coverage. This has more coverage than Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer and DuWop's Revolotion. It is a tube full of revolution!

The color range is slightly limited.
#1 is light beige for fair to light complexions
#2 is golden medium golden beige for light to medium complexions
#3 is a warm mocha for medium to dark complexions

Hydra Life Pro-Youth Skin Tint SPF 20 retails 39.00 and is exclusive to Sephora.

Disclosure: This first review is based on a sample from my local Sephora store. I loved it so much that I have purchased from Sephora.com
My bottle is in route via the mail.

Nanette by Nanette Lepore: A Review

Nanette by Nanette Lepore is an affordable dupe of Parfums DelRae's Bois de Paradis.

Nanette is a pink peppered rose with a big bushel of almost ripe blackberries. It settles into a powdery neroli note. In mid-drydown you pass glimpses of rose petals, violets and muguet.

Bois de Paradis is an intoxicating mixture of shimmery french roses, dangerously ripe blackberries and figs. Fig is a very comforting perfume note. It smells like hay or dry grass with a creamy coconut center.
The sillage cloud is great. Bois de Paradis just wafts and orbits all around you. It is a "siren call"perfume. It beckons admirers and compliments. It is truly deserving to be called a great classic fragrance.

Nanette might not have the allure and magic of Bois De Paradis. There is something that is stopping it from achieving similiar greatness. It could be the lighter touches of floral notes. It could be that the blackberries are of a different grade of quality. I am might be a kook...but the blackberries do not seem to be as dark and twisted as Bois de Paradis. In the end it could be the glaring omission of the fig. The drydown for both fragrances is a heavenly mix of spices, incense, and ambery woods.

I have gone through 2 bottles of Bois de Paradis. I am patiently waiting for a beautyhabit sale.
I caved on a roller ball bottle of the Nanette fragrance at Sephora.
http://www.sephora.com/
The 1oz bottle retails for $48.
The 2.5 oz bottle retails for $68.
The roller bottle retails for $18.50

Bois de Paradis is located at Luckyscent. It retails for $135.

Chasing Liberty

MAC Cosmetics and Target released their Liberty inspired collections almost simultaneously. Both collections quickly sold out online. Liberty of London is known for flowery, art nouveau prints. The shop opened in 1875 and sold fabric and objects from the East. Clients included Oscar Wilde and artists from the arts&crafts and art nouveau movements.
You can spot a Liberty print from a mile away. The flowers are tiny, bright and plentiful. The vines are cluttered and tangled. There are partridge birds and fruits. Everything is either cheerful or gothic romantic like Wuthering Heights.

So who had the better representation of the look and philosophy of Liberty fabric?
MAC Cosmetics.

I was bitterly disappointed with the Target line.
I purchased a scarf sight unseen.
Huge mistake. It looked like a bed sheet with cheap tassels.
To put it simply...it was a hot mess.
The print is all Liberty. The flowers are perky and happy. The color scheme is mint and buttery yellows. The quality of the fabric is not well translated.

MAC's Liberty collection was pure perfection. It captured the essence of Liberty.

The product and paper packaging is based on a William Morris design called Strawberry Thief. This print is littered with birds, leaves, vines, strawberries and flowers.

Open up the package, and you are greeted with friendly and colorful posies. It is a whimsical and lovely surprise!

The lippies are on the bright side.
1. Peachstock is a peach nude with no pink undertones. Great for olive toned gals! (satin)
2. Ever Hip is a creamy, light coral with a pink undertone. (cremesheen)
3. Blooming Lovely is a creamy, greyed out lilac. Less Blue than Lavender Whip. (amplified)
4. Petals and Peacocks is a creamy, ultra bright magenta pink(amplified formula). Brighter and more intense than MAC 's Show Orchid.

The lipglasses are pink twinged.
1. Frankly Fresh is a neutral pink beige pearl.
2. Perennial High Style is a bright coral with a rose undertone.

3. English Accents is a mid-toned lavender pink
and the one that seems out of place with the pinks is
A Different Groove which is a deep purple brown with pearl. This is more William Morris inspired.

The eye shadows capture the shades used in Liberty prints.
1. Give Me Liberty of London is a flat, matte sheer posey pink.
2. Free to Be sounds like a Chemical Brothers song and is a true matte coral.
3. Dames Desire is a frosty, reddish purple.
4. Bough Grey is a blueish gray with a quirky hint of green fire. Worth the buzz.

5. Birds and Berries is a dark, frosted teal blue with green flashes.

Nail Lacquer
1. Vestral White is a creamy white
2. Blue India is a cool, cornflower blue toned gray. This is a creme formula with no shimmer. I have layered it with great success with OPI's Alice in Wonderland shimmers.

The Powder Blushes are:
Prim & Proper is a neutral nude, satin formula and
Dirty Plum is a sheer, matte dark plum. Dirty Plum is hard for me to wear.

Beauty Powder
Shell Pearl(pictured) is a pale peach with gold pearl. It is the most perfect touch of apricot! I have been layering it with Ripe Peach with great success.

Summer Rose is a soft violet pink with pearl. Very flush-like.

This collection will be difficult to locate since it largely sold out and old by makeupalley standards. However, there are stragglers here and there.

Readers: If you have spotted this collection at your local MAC counter or free standing store...speak up and let us know. Tell us the store and phone number in the comments.
